If Ever He Would Leave Us …

Robert Goulet desperately needed a lung transplant.

It didn’t work out.

You youngsters won’t remember him. He came to stardom in 1960 playing Lancelot on Broadway in Lerner & Lowe’s “Camelot” opposite Richard Burton and Julie Andrews. His signature song from that show, “If Ever I Would Leave You,” became his signature song, and he was still performing it a half-century later. He had a minor acting career, but his baritone was strong and vibrant to the end.

If he hadn’t died today, Robert Goulet would surely have died had he heard ABC radio’s characterization of his life (6 PM PDT newsbreak):

“Goulet became a Broadway star in ‘Camelot’ and sang the Canadian National Anthem at the start of Wrestlemania 6.” (That’s an exact quote. UPDATE: And AGAIN at the 6:30 newsbreak. Different announcer.)

A lifetime as an entertainer and a singer (not an easy gig over a half-century) and you’re to be remembered for singing at a Wrestlemania “event”? Really? THAT was what you ought to be remembered for?

As soon as they can get him into his grave, I’m sure he’ll start spinning.

If he isn’t already.

Courage.
