A Penny for the Guy?
It’s Guy Fawkes Day.
“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”
If you don’t have any idea of what that is, it’s OK. Neither do the English.
The full verse was published as A brief Summe of the Treason intended against King & State, when they should have been assembled in Parliament, November 5. 1605. Fit for to instruct the simple and ignorant herein: that they not be seduced any longer by Papists.
Fawkes planned to blow up Parliament to reinstate Catholicism. Had he lived to the XXIst century, he’d have realized that the way to do it was NOT with gunpowder, but through Supreme Court appointments.
Courage.
