Even Before The Torture Monkeys Met
I am, of late, astonished and deeply ashamed for my nation that, just as the “constitutional democracy” that we’d spent the last 230 years in trying to form a “more perfect union,” of was catching on as THE form of government around the planet, and, just as everybody was taking it up, George W. Thug and his band of Evil Torture Monkeys from Hell showed every pipsqueak dictator and secret police thug who ever tapped a wire just how easy it was to give the APPEARANCE of democracy, as long as you controlled how the votes turned out.
Not that this was exactly a NEW development in American political history.
We let George steal the election via a corrupt supreme court on that dark December 12, 2000.
And our sterling example reverberated around the world.
(Pakistan’s General Musharraf tried to pull the “control the courts” bit just a few months ago, remember? )
Yeah. And everybody in the world looked at us and said, SHEEEEE-iittt! We don’t have to DO representative democracy at all. We just have to LOOK like it. And we’ve had “juiced” and outright rigged elections in HOW many countries since? Let’s see: Russia. The Ukraine. Mexico. Hmm. Those are all off the top of my head.
Just think if Hugo Chavez had pulled the same vote-counting stunt in Venezuela’s recent constitutional referenda. Hell, Marines would be down there RIGHT NOW.
The Bush Gang did the most damage to democracy before they got into office. Because they showed everybody else how to cheat.
And we bear a terrible judgment for allowing that to happen. Now, we hear of the latest electoral disaster. From our very own overseas Official Mouthpiece, The Voice of America:

Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change says 50 supporters have been arrested since Tuesday. The police say the number is fewer than 40. VOA’s Delia Robertson reports from our southern Africa bureau in Johannesburg.
The MDC says a newly elected lawmaker is among the dozens of opposition supporters arrested by police since the party called a national strike. The MDC named the lawmaker as Marvelous Khumalo, elected in Chitungwiza in North East Zimbabwe.
Police say those arrested are suspected of barricading roads, stoning vehicles and preventing people from going to work. The MDC said its call was for people to stay home and indoors. But there were independent reports of at least one burnt-out vehicle Wednesday along with remnants of makeshift barricades set up at the start of the strike.
The MDC asked Zimbabweans to strike in protest at the failure of the country’s Electoral Commission to release the result of the presidential election, held more than two weeks ago. But most people ignored the call to stay at home. By Wednesday, riot police were no longer on the streets of the capital, Harare….[more]
Yup. The election commission won’ t release the election results. Somebody named Mugave was watching his CNN on satellite in 2000. Or, perhaps more usefully for him, Faux Nooz.
After two hundred and seventy-four years of promulgating the fundamental goodness and decency of our Revolution to the world, we obliged that selfsame world — adopting democracy all over the place — to understand how you could invalidate elections by cheating, and constitutions by ignoring them.
Bravo. And now they dutifully follow our example. Sow the wind.
And, as the so-called “Leader of the Free World” we led the “free world,” all right: Right back into bondage.
And we still haven’t impeached the sonofabitch.
Unbelievable.
Courage.
