NEWSWEEK Takes the (Jew) Bait

The Rovian Spinners (see illustration) have been pushing the meme that Barack Obama has a Problem With The Jews. And today’s NEWSWEEK story confirms that the buzz is seeping into the mainstream media.

You’d probably not be interested that several of those blogs figured prominently in the “Dan Rather” rightie blog swarm and media assassination of 2004, and last summer’s “Private Beauchamp” blogswarm.

You probably wouldn’t be interested that the “Tinker to Evers to Chance” man in the Beauchamp Affair — who proposed it, coordinated it and spoon fed it to Howard Kurtz at the Washington Post and the New York Times– er, Michael Goldfarb, has taken a leave of absence from Bill Kristol‘s Rupert Murdoch-owned* The Daily Standard, where he was chief blogger, to take the job of Assistant Communications Director for the McCain campaign, as reported here on June 3.

[* NOTE: Bill Kristol is, in essence, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch. So WHY is it that the New York Times would hire Murdoch's Kristol as a "conservative" columnist knowing full well of his indenture to the competitor who is trying to put the New York Times out of business in a crush between the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal? (And the synergy of New York-based Fox News). Doesn't it strike one a preternaturally WEIRD that Kristol is writing for the Times? Like somebody knows where the bodies are buried, where the negatives are, where the master videotape is, is holding somebody's kid in a basement somewhere weird? No? Just wondering. HW]

So, the fact that yesterday’s blog swarm was about an alleged “Reverend Wright”-style blog posting on the Barack Obama social portion of the website (h/t to Cernig at Newshoggers) was fallacious was not as important as what we’re missing: these specific blogs generate buzz.

It is instructive to see how the Sunday Morning 9:50 AM (EST) Memeorandum just looks more or less like a Sunday paper. By 9:50 PM, a snarl* of Rightie Bloggers had attacked on the same talking point, the same post to push the same meme: that Barack Obama has a Jewish problem.

Yeah, and if enough monkeys typed long enough on enough typewriters they’d come up with Hamlet.

The coincidences mount and mount, don’t they? Here: this blog was instrumental in the Dan Rather crucifixion over Bush’s failure to serve in the National Guard.

And that’s just a teensy slice of the lemming-like swarm, all going over the selfsame logickal cliff.

Jeepers, you wouldn’t suppose they’re pushing as deep a wedge between the “black community” (since all blacks will automatically side with Obama) and the Jews? Naww.

Too fantastic to believe that a party that has, for decades, made special efforts to exclude, intimidate, de-register, dirty trick and otherwise eliminate black voters would try to create a wedge between Blacks and Jews, isn’t it?

Too fantastic to believe that there is a racist* element to this. (* A fundamental racism of “my gang’s better than your gang,” and “my God’s better than yours”)

But we do know certain facts:

The Rovian Spinners have been the pen of the monster, to be sure, but the hand that does the writing tells us its mindset continuously. It is the hand that tried to push the HATE THE ILLEGAL ALIENS! meme into “kill the monster” fervor and delighted in playing Iago to the Othello Desdimona primary campaign, with Seeming-Republican Operative/ABC ‘Newsman’ Brian Ross having done the investigative work (he’s been caught doing White House laundry before) and uncovered the most sensational Reverend Wright sermon he could, and fed it to the ravening press.

So, would you be surprised if the Rovian Spinners — those lures for unwary fish that are drawn by shiny objects — weren’t trying to push a specific reptile-brain configured message (Obama + Jews + Polarize) masked in a concerted buzz. The sort that a blogswarm makes.

It is a question that is best left to the judgment of the reader, but listen to what NEWSWEEK says:

Barack Obama received a standing ovation when he proclaimed his unwavering support for Israel to the influential lobbying group AIPAC last week. In her own AIPAC speech, Hillary Clinton said she was sure “that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel.” But Clinton’s reassuring words didn’t soothe the wounded feelings of some prominent Jewish Obama supporters, who charge that Clinton campaign operatives manufactured fear about Obama’s ethnic background and doubt about his loyalty to Israel in an effort to turn Jewish primary voters against him. And the article seems mostly to pooh-pooh the notion that there is any actual problem but notes that our old friend Joltin’ Joementum Joe Liebermann has been trotted out as the head of a John McCain astroturf group of, I guess, Jews for McCain’t. A whole lot of political code seems to be taking place with that article, which somehow never answers its own rhetorical question.

But the point has been scored: the meme is getting out there.

“Obama HUSSEIN (mumble mumble) Jews!”

It is blatant in its attempt to set two religions and two ethnic groups (with highly imperfect overlap) one against another. McCain meet McAbel. McAbel, McCain. (McCain who has plausible deniability in all of this, you will note.)

And it is planned and coordinated.

I kind of wonder if this isn’t the first test run of the McCain Michael Goldberg Blogosmear™ machine. Because it sure is funny that so many blogs have the exact same idea (embroidered endlessly, according to the temperament of the blogger, but, very often, openly saying GO TO THIS BLOG, or “so and so has the AMAZING story today,” whether it’s about Obama’s secret meetings with the space aliens, or his membership in the Illiminati of Bavaria and that his maternal great-great grandfather is Adam Weisshaupt. Or his cruel trapping of the unicorn herds, selling them for three-headed dog food from his Chicago* meat packing plants).

[* Trust me, that one will come, too: Obama is from ... CHICAGO! Al Capone! Mayor Daley. Kickbacks and bribery. Right now, it's still kind of the "Obama is a Muslim" -- kind of hard, if you're attacking his pastor to get the reptile brain to compute the two at the same time. You end up like every computer that ever did battle with Captain Kirk: locked in an impossible to compute loop. Except the reptile brain tends to drop both. Oh, and Barack the Muslim (Farrakhan, Wright) hates the Jews.]

Now, there is a presumption in all of this which I don’t think that the hidden hand of the talking points “narrative” has considered. We know that Karl Rove started his career working for Richard Nixon’s infamous 1972 dirty tricks campaign. And we know that the Republican base (and probably the leadership too) is completely convinced that the “liberal media” exists as some kind of conspiracy.

So, why would it be any stretch to think that our talking points writer’s MENTALITY believes, a la Richard Nixon, in the “Cabal of the Jews.” That’s the hidden angle here: whoever is pushing this attempt at a wedge seems to believe that two percent of the population are not only so important that they MUST be set against the Democratic nominee, but that that two percent all work together.

It’s that “Mel Gibson” never spoken aloud, but THERE, in the boy’s clubs, and in the fraternities, and still there at many country clubs, and at least once upon a time, in the White House.

And, listening to that, I have to wonder just how different the hand writing the talking points is in their view of Americans as racial “groups” each with monolithic characteristics and thus, manipulable in specific ways.

It was part of a mindset that still seems to operate within the White House and Congress. Did this part get thrown overboard? Hard to believe from their actions. This whole race war/ religious war thing seems a natural part of the politics of the Rovian Spinners.

Poor little fishies!

But I don’t wonder that this need to drive a wedge between Blacks and Jews is according to a plan, and a specific agenda. And I don’t wonder MUCH what this blogswarm and that NEWSWEEK article say about “their” effectiveness in propagating a false story — a self-fulfilling prophecy, seemingly hopefully — and what we can expect by way of Orwellian NewSpeak in the next five months.

Let’s watch as the ink spreads out through the watercolor paper of our national mythos media.
