Evidently he believes the latter. From The Malaysian Insider, undoubtedly a newspaper with all the credibility, journalistic integrity and reach of Willamette Week (where Jaquiss plies his peeping trade) [emphasis added]:
Willamette Week reporter Nigel Jaquiss, sceptical of Adams’ denials, says that when he continued to dig into the story, he was portrayed as a homophobe on a witch hunt. “I got a lot of heat,” he says, but he pursued the story and pressed Breedlove, now 21, to go on record about the affair….
Oooh. Poor Nigel. Taking heat. Must be like having someone dig into your private sex life and writing article after article with endless attributions from anonymous sources.
Uh, not.
Just what journalism holds up as its shining light to the world: anonymously sourced stories about sex.
“CIRCUS, n. A place where horses, ponies and elephants are permitted to see men, women and children acting the fool.”
Now, I can understand it for whistle-blowers genuinely fearful for their jobs or lives, but to dish anonymous hearsay evidence as “journalism”? Strikes me that if you’re going to make those kinds of statements publicly, then you’d either better have the courage to put your name on it, or else be considered a cruel gossip lacking in credibility, or blessed with a mile of sleazy incredibility.

Prudery is a kind of avarice, the worst of all.
– Henri-Marie Beyle (January 23, 1783 – March 23, 1842), better known by his pen name Stendhal
And the sleaze goes on, as the perverts of the Press, having latched onto the most tenuous of rationalizations CONTINUE with the anonymous accusations — this one almost certainly coming from a gay 22-year-old looking for a kind of twisted notoriety:
By Thom Jensen KATU News and KATU.com Staff
PORTLAND, Ore. – New details are emerging every day as the pieces of the scandal surrounding Portland’s embattled mayor continue to unfold and people come forward.
A longtime friend of Beau Breedlove, who spoke with KATU News on condition of anonymity, has new light to shed on the scandal that has divided the city into two sides – those for and against Mayor Sam Adams.
In this latest development, Breedlove’s friend told KATU News that he heard from him almost four years ago that he was having sex with a Portland politician – at a time when Breedlove was 17 years old.
“He didn’t say who, or his name, but said he was having sexual encounters with this person,” he said.
The friend met Breedlove at South Salem’s Sprague High School and said in the spring of 2005, Breedlove told him about the relationship….
Gee: if the “accusation” is true, of course, Nigel Jaquiss gets his wish and Sam Adams is destroyed politically, personally, and marked for life. But of course, broadcasting third-hand, hearsay gossip is considered “journalism” these days. After all, KATU has Nigel Jaquiss, martyr for decency, as a role model.
MORAL, adj. Conforming to a local and mutable standard of right. Having the quality of general expediency.
And, of course, the Oregonian published BIG beefcake photos of Beau Breedlove (the Holy Grail of Jaquiss’ OMG! Gay Sex Crusade),
as does something called GaySocialites.com, who seem more interested in the beefcake photos than the “morality” of the “story”:
-
Was Beau Breedlove really only 17 when he started having sex with Mayor Sam Adams?
-
Meet the guy at the center of the Sam Adams controversy, Beau Breedlove
I ain’t a’ gonna reprint the photos here. Even pornographers have their limits. But, of course, it’s NOT ABOUT THE SEX, as all these fine, honorable (in the Brutian sense) ‘journalists’ take pains to point out. And point out. And point out some more.
Might I inject a moment of my Satanic, Evil, Liberal and Libertarian (in the Heinleinian sense) Pornographic Sensibility here?
Whether Sam Adams and Beau Breedlove had sex within a couple of months of the artificial line of demarcation of “18″ it was consensual, mutual, and NONE OF OUR FUCKING BUSINESS.
THE DEVIL [mortified] señor DON JUAN: you are uncivil to my friends.
DON JUAN Pooh! why should I be civil to them or to you? In this Palace of Lies a truth or two will not hurt you. Your friends are all the dullest dogs I know. They are not beautiful: they are only decorated. They are not clean: they are only shaved and starched. They are not dignified: they are only fashionably dressed. They are not educated: they are only college passmen. They are not religious: they are only pewrenters. They are not moral: they are only conventional. They are not virtuous: they are only cowardly…
– G. B. Shaw, “Don Juan in Hell“
The entire “case” hinges on a technicality with ZERO practical value.
A technicality that is the difference between nothing and a life-destroying Scarlet Letter handed out by a yowling mob that Hawthorne’s disgusting Puritans would have found disgusting.
A “crime” only defined by an arbitrary line in the sand … except that even IF true, where is the crime?
There IS no injured party — there is only an allegedly sick journalist*, hellbent on renewing the twisted acclaim he got for destroying another man’s life in ANOTHER victimless “crime” — and a perverted pack of journalists and “moralists” pursuing a frenzied story that not only DOESN’T affect the public aspects of the mayor’s job, but actively BLOCKS the public interest by acting to paralyze the position of mayor, and, the city itself.
[* Er, I mean, a journalistic martyr for decency, bravely protecting the public from consensual gay sex by demanding that every jot and tittle of the law be in place, else Sam Adams be rightly destroyed, as that martyr for decency bragged that he had determined that Neil Goldschmidt must be destroyed (on the Al Franken Show).]
Q: When you don’t have a “victim” then where is the crime?
A: The crime is in the twisted minds of the perverts fanatically rationalizing how “moral” they all are.
But hey, that’s OK. We didn’t learn a FUCKING thing from Vietnam (see “Iraq”) and I guess we didn’t learn a FUCKING thing from the Clinton Impeachment, either.
RESPONSIBILITY, n. A detachable burden easily shifted to the shoulders of God, Fate, Fortune, Luck or one’s neighbor. In the days of astrology it was customary to unload it upon a star.
This is just porno for the squeamish, now. A “kill the monster” moment for the collective id and mobocracy.
“Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people whom we personally dislike.”
– Oscar Wilde
OK: no more of my “insane” position. Back to masturbating intellectually over something that’s none of your business.
We come to the twin truths of Oregon politics:
First, that Sam Adams is probably doomed. The mob yowls for blood. (Read the comments and commentary HERE.)
Second, that, in Oregon, Whom the gods would destroy, they would first make horny.
But, knowing that this is probably pointless, and can only personally harm me, I can only remember the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.
“The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.”
And — unwisely and pointlessly — write this anyway.

St. Anthony of Comstock, Oregon’s
Patron Saint of Sex Scandals
Well, at least somebody finally got ONE piece of the story right. The Malaysian Insider again (unsigned piece, from who-knows-where, just to keep in tune with the sterling journalism of this whole ball of serpents):
Portland’s mayor caught in sex bind
PORTLAND, Feb 1 — Did the popular new mayor of one of America’s most liberal cities cover up an affair with an underage intern?
The cast of Portland’s sex scandal has a certain ring to it: Sam Adams. Bob Ball. Beau Breedlove and his dog Lolita. “Everyone has porn names!” says Mark Wiener, laughing. “Until yesterday, it had never occurred to me that the worst offending name was mine.” Wiener (pronounced Weener) is one of Oregon’s most influential political consultants and a former — now disheartened — adviser to the protagonist in this political soap opera….
Yeah, porn names, one and all.
I’m guessing that ‘Nigel Jaquiss’ would be found mostly on Colt films titles.
That martyr for decency, I mean.

Courage.
[Note: if you're going to comment, quibble, quarrel or squeal, have the decency to read the prior installments, rather than waste everybody's time with issues already discussed. HW]

UPDATE 1:11 PM PST: Newsweek is on the story, with a gushing story of little “David” Jaquiss versus the “Goliath” Oregonian, just posted:
How an investigative reporter at a small Portland weekly scooped a nationally acclaimed daily paper on a sex scandal involving the city’s mayor.
[...]
[Nigel] Jaquiss … at age 35 had traded in an 11-year career in the marketplace for a reporter’s notebook after the death of his parents caused him to re-evaluate his life’s purpose. He knew if he went to press with a piece that Adams publicly called false, the reporter would spend weeks fending off critics who’d call him a sensationalistic homophobe, hungry for a repeat performance of the scoop he snared four years earlier when he dug up evidence that former governor Neil Goldschmidt had had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old babysitter in the 1970s, when Goldschmidt was Portland’s mayor.
[...]
But Jaquiss, who moved to Portland after an unsuccessful attempt at writing a novel about the Russian mob, didn’t buy [Adams' story] ….
Gee, does that mean the story of one lowly blogger — with a Wintel Pentium III and no special internet access beyond Google — who scooped the New York Times, Oregonian, Omaha World Herald, Newsweek, etc. etc. etc. and brought down a multi-state, multi-decade ballot conspiracy fueled by tens of millions of shadowy dollars is a story too?
I won’t hold my breath, Newsweek.

I don’t agree that Neil Goldschmidt’s and Sam Adams’ cases are both victimless. Sam Adams, yes. Neil Goldschmidt, no. Are you acquainted with the identity and struggles of the woman with whom Neil had sex, and swore to secrecy, starting when she was 14? No comparison at all.
Yes, I am. And if you read the extensive reporting I’ve done on it, rather than sitting around making moral pronunciamentos from On High, you’d know that I have already answered this question at length.
