March 1 note: I’m backfilling — legitimately. I wrote this yesterday in response to a fine post on Crooks and Liars by David Niewert, entitled: “Glenn Beck’s eliminationist attacks on progressives: How long before someone acts on this violent rhetoric?” A taste:
What motivates this kind of talk and behavior is called eliminationism: a politics and a culture that shuns dialogue and the democratic exchange of ideas in favor of the pursuit of outright elimination of the opposing side, either through suppression, exile, and ejection, or extermination.
Which you should read, and to which I replied (although it was undoubtedly wasted time on my part, to judge by the comments that followed):
Glenn Beck: Buck Feck.
The sad part of all this is that without that vast, imbecilic gaggle of drooling dittoheads, Beck would have nothing more than a soapbox in a public park somewhere, where he could rant in a drool-splattered trenchcoat with a crumpled brown paper bag wrapped around a bottle of Thunderbird.
Instead, they feed on each other, an endless feedback loop of mindless, insensate rage at a world they neither understand nor fit into. Yes, it’s the fertile soil from which the Brownshirts sprang, and the grave problem that we’ve got is — to be charitable — 24 years of ignoring the increasingly insane rhetoric that Rush began spewing in 1986, as soon as St. Ronald of Ray Gun assured all and sundry that no “fairness doctrine” was needed in the debate on the public airwaves.
The term in debate is a “lack of clash.” We don’t challenge them — when we can: it is invariably a one-sided debate, with our voices scrupulously scrubbed from talk shows, from blogs, and, finally, from media altogether.
Al Gore was savaged in the press today for pointing out that global warming is still REAL, despite all the Exxon-Koch astroturf and propaganda, fake kerfuffle and phony “idiots are smarter than smartypants scientists” nonsense.
And NO ONE stood up to them. No one said a word*. No one had Al’s back. At best, we snarked him, along with all the other clueless nitwits that live to inhale the perfume of Beckian flatulence.
(* OK: Just brave Joe at Climate Progress.)
First we gotta fight back. With words, hopefully, before it becomes more weaponized. And second, we GOTTA cover each other’s backs.
Olbermann was savaged last week, and, again, no one speaks up for him.
ACORN is being destroyed in front of our eyes, and we do NOTHING to stand up for them.
Quit waiting for “George” to do it. George DID do it, and he DID it to YOU. Or have you forgotten?
A government of the people, by the people, and for the people falls if the people do NOTHING. If all they can do is stab one another in the back because they are too frightened to attack the REAL enemy: the Becks, the Boners (sic), the Pat Toomeys, the Howie Riches.
(And the Mary Beth Buchanans, who are now running for congress, having told the elected president of the United States that she wouldn’t stop her jackbooting in Pittsburg as the US Attorney until she FELT like it, viz. November 2009! Remember her? The thug who claims her only regret is not giving Tommy Chong more jail time for her entrapment of his son’s glass bong business? Yeah. Where’s the coverage of THAT abomination?)
As for me, I’ve been standing alone for a long time now, but I ain’t going to back down on these bastards. If you want to join me, feel free, but I ain’t running from these puling cowards.
And I’ve got the scars to prove it.
Therefore, do not ask for whom the bell tolls, progressives,
it tolls for thee.
