Howie Rich’s ALG Director Larry Marchant in Sex Scandal

Welcome Crooks and Liars readers.

Nikki Haley, South Carolina GOP gubernatorial primary candidate

The Sex Scandal in the South Carolina GOP governor’s race has taken a new twist. According to the Charleston, South Carolina’s The Post and Courier [emphasis added]:

Bauer campaign adviser asked to resign

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Andre Bauer said today he has asked for and received the resignation of a political consultant for “inappropriate conduct” but would say little more.

Lt. Gov. Bauer announced that adviser Larry Marchant gave him his resignation at noon today.

Bauer said he had become aware of a situation several days ago, and reached the conclusion that decisive action was dictated.

His news release contained no specifics. “We asked for and received the resignation,” Bauer spokesman Hank Page said in an e-mail. “Beyond that, we will have no further comment.”

Larry Marchant. Hmm. Why does that name ring a bell?

Oh yes, I remember. Wasn’t he on the board of Americans for Limited Government?

Yeah. I guess he was. And, since I just obtained the 2008 ALG tax return (Time stamped as received on November 13, 2009 — they regularly wait as long as possible to file their publicly viewable tax returns, just as they’ve become adept at flooding cash into political races just after the last pre-election contribution and expenditure reports), I wonder if Larry Marchant is STILL on the board, at least as of 2008/9?

Yup. Same Larry.

I haven’t really gone into just how deeply Howie Rich has been attempting to influence and buy South Carolina’s GOP, mostly because the amazing Ross Shealy has done such a sterling job of rooting it out:

[You'll notice that Paul Farago is one of those listed. He has relocated from Portland, Oregon -- where he was chief petitioner for various Howie Rich ballot measures -- to North Carolina, just over the SC border since 2o06.]

Now, ABC News jumps into the tawdry details of this latest hiking of the Appalachian Trail tale:

Female SC Gov Hopeful Denies Claim of 2nd Affair
Woman running for SC governor bashing claim of another affair made by accuser with no proof

The Associated Press

A South Carolina lobbyist resigned from a rival political campaign on Wednesday and then became the second man to claim he had a tryst with a Republican lawmaker trying to become the state’s first female governor.

Lobbyist Larry Marchant admitted he had no proof to back up his allegation of a one-night stand with state Rep. Nikki Haley in 2008 and her campaign vehemently denied the allegation. The claim became the latest political drama for a state that was roiled when Gov. Mark Sanford made a tearful confession last summer to sneaking out of the country to rendezvous with an Argentine woman.

Earlier in the day, Marchant resigned from the campaign of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is competing with Haley for the GOP nomination in the June 8 primary.

“It never happened. Absolutely not,” Haley said emphatically about Marchant’s claim during a debate with Bauer and the two other Republican candidates in Charleston. “This is just disgusting politics. Two or three months ago I was Nikki who? and nobody was saying anything and a couple weeks ago we started going double digits up in the polls and now we have had everything thrown at us.”

Haley’s campaign manager had the same message.

“As Nikki Haley rises in the polls, the good old boys in Columbia see their taxpayer-funded fraternity party coming crumbling down, and they will say or do anything to hold onto their power,” Tim Pearson said earlier. “This is South Carolina politics at its worst.”

Marchant concedes he can’t prove his allegation. “We knew up front that I didn’t have any evidence because you can’t have any evidence on a one night affair — you don’t have that.”

Marchant’s claim is the second leveled at Haley in as many weeks. Political blogger Will Folks said he and Haley had an “inappropriate physical relationship” in 2007. Despite dribbling out days of innuendo on his website, Folks has yet to prove his claims. He was not married at the time of the alleged relationship… [MORE]

Fits News (a right wing — but pretty good —  South Carolina blog) has been tracking Marchant:

Lobbyist Managing Bauer Bid
By fitsnews • on July 14, 2009

S.C. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has retained the services of a prominent South Carolina lobbyist to help him manage his political destiny.

Larry Marchant, who has lobbied unsuccessfully for several years to pass a cigarette tax increase on behalf of Blue Cross Blue Shield CEO Ed Sellers, has been retained by Bauer as a consultant.

FITS pegged Marchant as a Bauer advisor in a previous post, but it was unknown at the time that he was also serving as a paid advisor.

Details of Marchant’s contract with Bauer were not immediately available.

SC Gov. Mark Sanford wipes away a tear as he recalls
his Appalachian Trail Adventure to the gathered press

You might notice that Howie Rich had sunk a lot of money in the PREVIOUS SC Governor, Mark Sanford, who was being groomed to run as a Libertarian Republican presidential candidate before his unfortunate Appalachian Hiking. After Sanford’s fall from grace, Andre Bauer, the Lt. Gov. became the heir apparent, and Marchant moved into his inner circle.

When Howard Rich traveled to South Carolina in 2008, he was interviewed in Katon Dawson’s home, Dawson having been the SC GOP Chairman at the time, and, following the election, came within 7 votes of becoming the national GOP Chairman — losing to Michael Steele on the final ballot by that margin. Here’s the interview.

Now, how many out there think that only the sex will make any news? And how many believe the national media will pick up on this incredible attempt over the past several years for Howard Rich and his shadowy financial backers to take over the SC GOP and push through their Milton Friedman influenced “school vouchers” program as a first step in ending public education?

I think the voters who picked “sex” will carry the day, but it’s too goddamned bad.

Whether some candidate had a little nookie on the side (in this case, a female) is nothing compared to a systematic attempt to buy the politics of a Southern State by a Manhattan slumlord (OK, Howie is in “exile” in Philadelphia as a protest against NYC’s taxes).

Speaking of which, Howie’s mysteriously behind a controversial Alaska initiative slated for their August primary election, in his usual stealth modus operandi. Busy boy:

Alaska Municipal League warns of ‘gag’ initiative

Friday, May 14, 2010

A ballot measure facing Alaska voters in August claims to be opposed to corruption, but Alaska Municipal League’s Kathie Wasserman says it is actually an attack on citizen participation in their government.

Wasserman told the Juneau Chamber of Commerce Thursday that a ballot measure deemed the “anti-corruption” initiative isn’t what it appears.

Wasserman said the measure was backed by Howard Rich, a New York multi-millionaire who has targeted states with weak initiative laws to back his libertarian views.

He then finds local sponsors to submit initiative petitions and hires signature gatherers to qualify the initiatives for the ballot, she said.

The three local sponsors in Alaska are all registered Libertarians….

Now: does your national media ever tell you about any of this stuff since I outed Howie nationally in 2006?

Not on your tintype. Lapdogs don’t go for that kind of stuff. But they’re pretty good at sniggering about sex.

UPDATE 6:00 PM PDTAllahpundit at Hot Air weighs in (and if you see him criticizing a Republican, you KNOW that lines have been crossed) [emphasis added]:

… So instead of keeping quiet about an alleged affair of which, by his own admission, there’s zero proof, he felt duty bound to disclose it right before the primary. And Andre Bauer felt duty bound to mention in his press release that [Larry] Marchant was let go for “inappropriate conduct,” which isn’t at all a signal that we should believe something really did happen between him and Haley. We’re hip-deep in filth here.

  1. You gotta love the ‘answer’ to the campaign finances law question in the video: ‘I believe in private property. I earned that money, and I can do anything I want with it. What I did is 100% legal.’

Ok, let me reduce that: ‘anything involving private money is legal’.

  2. That’s pretty much exactly right, Jan.

And, sadly, five Supreme Court “Justices” — The Alter Boys — seem to be in whole(black)hearted agreement.
