The Sword of Damocles

The situation in Egypt has resolved itself into two distinct paths:

It will either be a “Velvet Revolution,” in which power changes hands non-violently, or it will be another Tienanmen Square.

Worse, for the USA and Israel, it looks as though the path resolves itself to the status quo — an authoritarian dictatorship committed to peace with Israel — else (most likely) an emergent democracy hostile to Israel and probably the precursor to the first full blown war since 1973.

Either way, this week the Sword of Damocles is poised over the Middle East, suspended by a single hair.

Courage.

  1. Good analogy but you miss the point of this situation.

The United States keeps making deals with despots and dictators as long as they support America’s point of view. In other words American administrations make deals with devils and hope those devils will not attempt to collect. Does America really support the idea of real democracy everywhere in the world? Probably not. The United States wants nations who will support American interests.

    • Wouldn’t want the USA (or any other country) to act in its own national interests.

I’m obviously too dim to grasp the gravity of the situation, and stand corrected.

Of course, I am STILL wondering where my factual error was.
