Article III Section 3 of the United States Constitution gives a simple, originalist definition of the issue at hand:
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.
Under that definition — adopting the Tea Party/ 912 groups’ notion of fundamentalist interpretation of the plain language of the Constitution, and tossing out all interpretations of the Constitution that have transpired since March 4, 1789, when it was actually placed in service, 81,104 days ago, or 222.2027 years ago, today — a whole lot of treason seems to be going on.
I was amazed to arise this morning and hear the chatter, as every group and demographic in the land seems to have taken up the call to arms to attack the President, the Libyan Operation, the European allies, the Arab League, the United Nations, and, as I listen to the fatuous buffrontery of the Right’s Number One kerfluffer (still), Rush Limbaugh, NATO itself, which he has “humorously” renamed the “North Africa Terrorism Alliance” — or, if he’d finish his math, the NATA when he was going for NATO, which I ought suggest that he enter the North American Denialist Alliance, which would be NADA.
I don’t suppose I get it. Don’t we support our troops? Aren’t we giving aid and succor to Muoammmmerrrsersff KQaffdaffiyikayq? (Or, however it’s spelt.)
Should read “E unum pluribus crankus“
The functional result of this still mindless and unfocused media frenzy is in “adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” In this case, “their” ought to be “our” but the framers weren’t used to thinking of themselves as us yet — even though we instinctively and unquestioningly think of us as them.
Where is all that patriotism?
Where are the “Love it or leave it” patriots? Where are the gun lovers? The “My country right or wrong” stickerers of bumpers, the “Support our Troops” and “American Heroes” car-magnet patriots? The tri-corner hatters — mad and un — the Gadsen flaggers, the Red, White and Bluers? The communist haters? (Oh, wait. Those last ones are preoccupied, right here in the good ol’ Yew Essay. Let’s hear it: YEW ESSAY! YEW ESSAY! YEW ESSAY!)
Where are all the gushing declarations of love for our country, for our perfectly and never misbehaving troops, for our divinely-ordained mission in the world as Bringers of Good and Curers of Disease, Peacers of Corps, Aiders of Foreigners, protectors of the oppressed and righteous defenders of rights for the rightless (unless they not be Right, of course)?
Ah, there’s the rub — “rub” being, in this case, “treason” as defined plainly in the Cornstitooshun.
The 1787 signing of the Constitution
But all these many years later, we’re back to the “shores of Tripoli,” as goes the Marine’s song, and were America to present a united front, Moe-amahr Qhuhdhaffiey would undoubtedly be negotiating for his villa in sunny Saudi Arabia. (They’re no longer using the old Idi Amin estate, I would imagine.)
Instead, this screeching disunity to grab meaningless political points in the all-star wrestling match that Washington, D.C. has become is actively giving aid and comfort to Codoffy and merely extending Muammamahr’s jihad against his own people. Thus, giving aid and comfort to our murderous enemy. (You might recall the Lockerbie bombing.*)
[* You might find this important if not authoritative.]
Is it treason? Read that plain language of the Constitution.
But I wouldn’t worry about it. Because, even when hundreds of thousands are dead, we don’t prosecute war crimes in this country.
So a little mindless treason ought not be a problem.
If that’s your thing.
That’s my 3¢’ worth, at least.
Courage.
