Moral Turgidity: Is Laura Ingraham a Slut? (conclusion)

The Pulse-Pounding,  Senses-Shattering  Über-Finale

[Part i is here: Moral Turgidity: Is Laura Ingraham a Slut?]

OK.

The one question that has NOT been asked in all of this is the most important. WHAT does “slut” mean?

Not a slut. A Snap-on Tool Calendar Girl

I am reminded of the moment that my mother, in tears, told my brother and I with great outrage and umbrage: “He called me a ‘WHORE’!”

Not having any idea of what the word meant, but knowing of horehouse candy (a kind of sarsaparilla/rutabaga-esque stick candy), I could not divine HOW to be outraged on her behalf. It would be as if I came to you in tears, weeping profusely from having been wounded to the quick, saying “they called me an ‘ipsofactoidal polyhedral domicile estuary’!”

Uh …

So, let’s not be so quick to conclude that we know what “slut” means in this context. Let’s define the term and see how or if it might apply, shall we?

That would smack of intellectual honesty, of course, but I won’t tell anybody if you won’t.

Three different dictionaries tell us this:

Not a slut. Merely deranged.

And here’s the etymology:

Word Origin & History

slut

c.1400, “a dirty, slovenly, or untidy woman,” probably cognate with dialectal Ger. Schlutt “slovenly woman,” dialectal Swed. slata “idle woman, slut,” and Du. slodder “slut,” but the ultimate origin is doubtful. Chaucer uses sluttish (late 14c.) in reference to the appearance of an untidy man. Also “a kitchen maid, a drudge” (mid-15c.; hard pieces in a bread loaf from imperfect kneading were called ‘ slut’s pennies , 18c.). Meaning “woman of loose character, bold hussy” is attested from mid-15c.; playful use of the word, without implication of loose morals, is attested from 1660s.

“Our little girl Susan is a most admirable slut, and pleases us mightily.” [Pepys, diary, Feb. 21, 1664]

Sometimes used 19c. as a euphemism for bitch to describe a female dog. There is a group of North Sea Gmc. words in sl- that mean “sloppy,” and also “slovenly woman,” and that tend to evolve toward “woman of loose morals” (cf. slattern, also English dial. slummock “a dirty, untidy, or slovenly person,” 1861; M.Du. slore “a sluttish woman”).

Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper

Notice how the term moves from physical dirtiness to moral dirtiness. It is not originally connected with moral turpitude as much as bad physical hygiene.

Famous Quotations

slut

“Self-righteousness is the most shameless slut of all.”

And one more definition with a pronunciation:

slut
[sluht]
–noun
1. a dirty, slovenly woman.

2. an immoral or dissolute woman; prostitute.

Origin:
1375–1425; late Middle English slutte; compare dial. slut mud, Norwegian (dial.) slutr sleet, impure liquid

Now, we note that in its origin, and its use to this day, “slut” indicates a MORALLY tarnished woman. (Sorry that there isn’t a linguistically related male term).

But not an attention slut, please note.

Let’s take a look at some of Ingraham’s “morality” (from Campus Progress dot org):

… Ingraham got her start in journalism at Dartmouth, where she was the first female editor of the ultra-conservative Dartmouth Review. Already tarnished by its reputation for bigoted, homophobic, and sexist reportage, Ingraham took the Review to new levels when she secretly taped meetings of the campus Gay Students Association, sent copies of the tapes to participants’ parents, and, as if that wasn’t enough, published the transcript and went on to publicly denounce the GSA as “cheerleaders for latent campus sodomites.”

[...]

Today Ingraham is best known for her nationally syndicated radio show broadcast on 325 stations across the country. Remarkably, she has garnered quite an audience, most likely made up of “true Americans,” who according to Ingraham are “white, southern, Christian, and Republican.” Whoever they are, they’ve been roped in by Ingraham’s sophomoric humor, her rambling tales about her dog, her epic search for a husband, and of course, her endless rants and raves condemning the evil Elites, the evil U.N., and the evil Europeans. She is the author of two long-winded meandering books: Shut up and Sing: How Elites from Hollywood, Politics, and the UN are Subverting America and The Hillary Trap: Looking for Power in all the Wrong Places.

Well, that’s not promising, ethically OR morally. They include some quotes:

Whoops. Not a slut, but wrong Laura.

On liberal “elites”: “Terrorists, and their facilitators and friends, aren’t jealous at all. Like our own self-hating elites, they genuinely detest democracy and the principles enshrined in the constitution.” (Shut Up and Sing, p. 73)

More on liberal “elites”: “Elites are … fundamentally anti-American.” (Shut Up and Sing, p. 74)

More on Elites: They “live in palaces invisible from the road outside, and fly in private jets, while their managers and assistants tell them only what they want to hear.” (Shut Up and Sing, p. 17)

On the Media: “I don’t mind if we’re all twisted up about how the cable news is so awful, or it’s for the stupid people. I’m happy for that debate to go on, because Republicans will continue to win, as long as that’s the focus.” (Remarks, Feb. 12, 2005)

Gee, that last one is prophetic. Speaking of which, this was Ingraham’s “response” to the kerfluffing, on Facebook, naturally:

Doctor Laura in Friskier Days,
allegedly only DRESSING like a slut.

Response to Ed Schultz
by Laura Ingraham on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 2:04pm

Re. the crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book “Of Thee I Zing.” Now I’m tempted to insert one additional zing–about men who preach civility but practice misogyny.

Gee, for someone who got their start “as a member of the anti-feminist Independent Women’s Forum, Ingraham had assisted in the “Women for Judge Thomas” campaign that supported her future boss’s appointment to the Supreme Court and promoted attacks on Anita Hill’s testimony,” it doesn’t actually seem like “misogyny” is an axe she ought to be wielding.

I mean, does misanthropy trump misogyny? Or even intellectual misfeasance?

Earlier in the year, in response to the suggestion of Todayshow host Katie Couric that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld apologize or resign in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal, Ingraham said: “How about Matt and Katie apologize for that lame show they put on every day?”

But you will notice that, far from even seeming offended, Ingraham seems delighted to double down on the insults and to promote her NEW BOOK! Any attention, seemingly, is an opportunity to monetize the latest commercial venture.

Raymond Arroyo

Laura Ingraham

And here’s his weirdly slithery yet “moral” bio:

Raymond Arroyo is an internationally known, award-winning journalist, producer, and New York Times Bestselling author. As news director and lead anchor for EWTN, he is seen in more than 150 million homes on six continents each week. Mr. Arroyo established EWTNews in 1996, creating several programs including “The World Over Live” which he hosts from Washington DC before a live studio audience. The program was named “Best Religious Show or Series in Cable Television for 2009″ by CableFAX Magazine.

Known for his penetrating interviews, Mr. Arroyo has interrogated the leading figures of the day.… Read more

EWTN turns out to be:

The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) is an American cable television network which presents Catholic-themed programming. It was founded in 1980 by Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, PCPA (born Rita Antoinette Rizzo). EWTN received its license from the Federal Communications Commission on January 27, 1981[1] and began broadcasting on August 15, 1981 from a garage at the Our Lady of the Angels monastery in Irondale, Alabama.

And Wikipedia notes Mr. Arroyo’s connection to Ms. Ingraham, bringing it full circle:

The EWTN news department produces a daily news service for television and radio, featuring news sources including Vatican Radio. They also produce The World Over Live, which covers relevant current events. It is hosted by journalist and author Raymond Arroyo (who is also EWTN’s news director). The program is conservative in its political orientation and generally conservative in its religious orientation. Notable guests have included Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation, author and activist George Weigel, political commentator Laura Ingraham, conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan, and the late columnist and commentator Robert Novak, a Jewish convert to Catholicism.

So, another ghost-written book, with a good Catholic amanuensis, no doubt chained to a desk in the scriptorium. Personally, as a professional for lo, these three plus decades, I STILL find ghost-written books to be fundamentally immoral. If you can’t act, they don’t get a stunt actor to play your lines. If you can’t sing, they don’t get stunt musicians to sing your stuff (unless you’re Milli Vanilli, and look how we ostracized those fakers). If you can’t paint, you don’t hire an artist and then sign your name to it. So, too, the ghosted book strikes me as fundamentally dishonest and a tarnishing agent on the soul.

But that’s just me. So, what’s this good Catholic-ghosted book about?

Devoted to insults. “Of Thee I Zing” ho ho. How clever.

But I doubt that it is an illuminated manuscript.

So, is the use of the term “slut” appropriate to Ms. Ingraham if we bear in mind the sense of a soul caked with filth or mud?

Actually, “talk radio slut” is probably a mild term for what Ms. Ingraham is.

But conservative and absurdly high self-esteem women tell me that it is a hateful and sexist term, and since I am not of the proper gender, I must accept that it is the case, even though I exist within a society awash in a flood of “bitches” — which technically means a female dog.

And supposed Republican “front-runners” can call the Chinese “motherfuckers” with nary a comment on how truly awful and irresponsible that is.

Hell, just listen to Ingraham’s show, if you can find it. If not, listen to Hannity or Limbaugh or Beck, or, Laura’s patron, Bill O’Reilly. And see if you can muster that same sense of outrage and moral indignation for anything THEY say. I’d say “Michael Savage” but that would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Oddly, they all always get passes. Indeed, you can view the transcript and listen to the mp3 of Rush Limbaugh’s First Radio Address Following Drug Addiction Treatment to appreciate just how reflexive this “always being right, even when you’re wrong” can be.

But I come here not to praise Ed, but to bury him, because these assholes are all honorable men.

Yeah. Right. Sure.

And, taking my persona as Freelance Wizard, I offer this heart-felt advice to EdSchultz. But what about immunity from criticism, no matter how bad Ed misspeaks?

FWizard:
Why, anybody can have immunity from criticism. That’s a very mediocre commodity.
Every pusillanimous ward-heeler that crawls on the earth,
or slinks through slimy streets has immunity! Back where I come from we
have mass media – seats of great bloviating – where men
go to become great pundits.

And when they come out, they think that they have deep
thoughts, and with no more critical immunity than you have.
But – they have one thing you haven’t got – a right wing radio talk show!
Therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by KCUF, streaming right wing talk radio,
I hereby confer upon you an honorary right wing talk radio show, with the honorary degree of Ah.E.

EdShultz:
Ah.E.?

FWizard:
Yeah – that – that’s Asshole of Eschatology.

EdShultz:
Well somebody on YOUR side once did something like this thing we’re blathering about, so you can’t get upset about this on my side, now CAN you? Projecting? NO! YOU’RE projecting! I’m rubber, you’re glue, it bounces off me and sticks to you. Obama is a racist.
Oh, joy! Rapture! I’ve got critical immunity! How can I ever thank you enough?

FWizard:
Well, you can’t! As for you my fine friend, you are a victim or disorganized thinking. You are under the unfortunate delusion that simply because you run away from danger you have no courage! You are confusing courage with wisdom… You are, in fact, a Progressive!

And so forth.

Dystopian Oz, or It Ain’t Green ‘Cuz of “Emeralds”

Is Laura Ingraham a slut? I happily invoke the privilege of all “real journalists” inasmuch as I not only won’t answer the question, but I shall give you no clue as to whether I even have an opinion on the subject. You now have enough information to begin to form some sort of opinion that you didn’t have before.

And, in that craven shucking of all moral and ethical responsibility whatsoever, I feel at peace.

No way I am going to defend Ed Schultz, and might even offer vague disapproval.

Thus indelibly establishing my credentials as a liberal.

If I had any intestinal fortitude, or, indeed, a spine, I’d ask the Kerfluffing Corps.and their Mainstream enablers why they don’t comment on the unrelenting stream of hate that fills the radio airwaves 24/7/365, in which slurs worse than Ed’s are as commonplace as grains of sand on the beach.

But, fortunately, I have no such qualms. I am as blandly lacking in opini0ns as a turnip.

After all, if they can say anything they want, and someone like Ed Schultz finally misspeaks out of an understandable anger at the relentless and unceasing torrent of mindless hatred being slathered onto the President of the United States day after day, month after month and year after year over the most trivial and insubstantial of “facts” — that ofttimes turn out not to be “facts” at all — clearly it’s someone like Ed Schultz who is the problem and to blame and unworthy of empathy or support, and not hate-merchant sociopaths like Laura Ingraham, who is clearly as pure as the driven snow.

Because, clearly, he isn’t perfect.

The motherfucker.

Courage.
