There is one inevitable arc to the life of Gollum/Smeagol in LOTR, and it’s that his greed for “the Precious,” is the only thing in his life. At the end, he’s so busy gloating that he probably doesn’t really notice that he’s also killed himself.
He is willing to play the game to extinction, and, in self-fulfilling prophecy, he does.
The “game” of the Precious is ALL to him. It is his sole reason for existence, his raison d’être.
