The ‘Crazy’ Catch 22 Kicks In

Punditry goes to work

Well, as is expected, the needs of a nation of arm-chair psychiatrists must be met.

Sandy Hook mass murderer Adam Lanza, 20, ‘deeply disturbed kid’
NY Daily News
Lanza, who friends and officials said suffered from Asperger’s syndrome or a personality disorder, had a tortured mind.

He was dark and disturbed, a deeply troubled boy from a wealthy family who unnerved his neighbors and classmates.

Mass murderer Adam Lanza, 20, was a ticking time bomb, people who knew him told the Daily News.

“This was a deeply disturbed kid,” a family insider told the Daily News. “He certainly had major issues. He was subject to outbursts from what I recall.”

Yup. We all knew it, of course, knowing nothing. And, as I have noted before, certitude varies in inverse proportion to actual knowledge: the more you know about a thing, the less certain you are; the less you know, the more certain you know EXACTLY what the deal is.

As a result, there is a superabundance of certainty about what happened, and articles in the ensuing daze will only cement that, if all past experience is any indication.

We’re at the old Catch 22 phase of mediathink: Since killing a lot of people is insane, therefore the shooter must have been insane and therefore nobody around the shooter saw that he was insane, so it’s their fault for not seeing it.

Conversely the same circular argument is made the other way: since shooting is insane, the shooter was insane and therefore not responsible for their insanity. Neither is logical, but the fallacy is accepted as such anyway.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

We still don’t understand the psychology of this

Wisdom suggests learning what’s the dealeo before shooting off the moutheo, but in an instant gratification culture, we need answers NOW, dammit.

But when the answers DO finally show up, we’re all off somewhere else, opining with certitude on the train wreck du jour.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Courage.

Courage.

  1. There is another reason why he was “disturbed”, he’s white. Were he brown or Middle Eastern, he would have been considered the spokesman for his whole race, doing what you just KNOW they all would like to do.

  2. It’s all a plot, cleverly crafted by Obama, to take away GUNS. If you did that, how would the RW males ‘compensate’?
