Stupidity’s Perfect Storm



NRA airs new TV ad criticizing Obama on eve of White House gun announcement

Washington (CNN) – The National Rifle Association released a new television commercial Tuesday night charging President Barack Obama of hypocrisy for being “skeptical” about placing armed guards at schools, while his own two daughters are protected by the U.S. Secret Service.

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” a narrator says in the 30 second ad. “Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school.” [...]

I am not going to fiske this, for there are enough sharp tongues for the task. No: what I want to talk about is a perfect storm of stupidity: years of Second Amendment absolutism, deeply ingrained into the fiber of a culture, unquestioned, patriotic, from the cradle. And years of propaganda that “Obama is going to take away your guns.”

Old saying in the law: when the law is on your side, pound on the law; when the facts are on your side, pound on the facts; and when nothing is on your side, pound on the table. The NRA is pounding on the table. But … Continue reading
