All the news stories on Google seem to confirm that the Vatican said it. BBC has live coverage:
- Pope Benedict XVI announces he is to resign in the evening of 28 February
- He delivered the news in Latin to a meeting of Vatican cardinals
My gut feeling?
It’s not about age. It’s about getting out from under the long-running, expensive and damaging worldwide pedophilia cases that KEEP breaking*, and his longstanding role in protecting the predators. I have a feeling that he was prevailed upon by many within the power structure to take the fall. Politics is, ultimately, politics, no matter the venue.

They’re speculating on the Pope’s age, but noting that nothing in his recent behavior shows any signs of diminution or debility. Adding a bit of credibility to my hunch.
Saying “This is a radical move.”
No speculation as to why, other than health reasons. Interesting.
OK: Now they’re reporting “he says he no longer has the strength to carry out the duties of his ministry.”
BBC slug says “FIRST POPE TO RESIGN IN 600 YEARS.” The news was delivered in Latin.
Ora pro nobis.
Or, perhaps …
More to come.
